The US administration led by Joe Biden will continue to support Ukraine “infallibly and unshakably” regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s midterm elections, the US White House presidency assured on Monday.
Joe Biden “is determined to work with both sides”, Democrat and Republican in this direction, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said, as conservatives prepare to take over at least one of the two chambers of Congress.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy reiterated in an interview broadcast by CNN Monday that his desire is “not to write a blank check” to Kiev if his party wins a majority in the midterm elections.
Despite ensuring that Ukraine “must be supported vigorously”, McCarthy warned that authorities “need to be more careful in the future” and “ensuring that resources are used where they are needed”🇧🇷
The Republican could become the Speaker (Chairman) of the House of Representatives, replacing Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
This Friday, Jake Sullivan, Joe Biden’s national security adviser, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, where he announced Washington funding for the modernization of armored vehicles and surface-to-air missile systems.
This latest round of military aid brings total US aid to Ukraine to about $18.2 billion since the start of the Russian invasion.
The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24 has already resulted in more than 13 million people having fled — more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.7 million to European countries — according to the latest UN data, which ranks this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the generality of the international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and Russia of political and economic sanctions.
The UN presented as confirmed 6,490 dead civilians and 9,972 wounded since the start of the war, underlining that these numbers are far below the actual number.
