“We are appalled that this has occurred at our site,” the Lakeside Alliance, an alliance of black contractors, said in a statement after a hangman’s noose was found at the future “Barack Obama Presidential Center” in Chicago.
The noose-shaped rope, which evokes the lynchings of thousands of African-Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was discovered Thursday morning in the neighborhood where the career of the first black president of the United States began. It led to the suspension of the construction works of the museum dedicated to the career of the former Democratic president of the district.
$100,000 reward
“Let’s offer a $100,000 reward to find the person or people responsible,” the Lakeside Alliance said.
“Hate has no place in Illinois,” the Democratic governor of this state in the Great Lakes region, JB Pritzker, commented on Twitter. “This rope is more than a racist symbol – it is a stark reminder of the violence and terror inflicted on black Americans for centuries,” he added.
