Midterms in the United States: Democrats maintain control of the Senate

“I look forward to the next two years,” US President Joe Biden responded.

The Democratic Party won the seat it needed to maintain control of the US Senate on Saturday, a decisive victory for Joe Biden’s continuation of the presidency and a bitter defeat for his predecessor, Donald Trump. “I feel good and I look forward to the next two years,” replied Joe Biden from Phnom Penh (Cambodia) on the sidelines of an Asian summit.

Four days after the midterm elections, US media said the victory of Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto in the swing state of Nevada. The incumbent narrowly defeated Adam Laxalt, a candidate supported by former President Donald Trump, according to US television networks.

His re-election brings the number of Democrats elected to the Senate to 50 out of 100, allowing Joe Biden’s party to maintain control of the upper house of Congress. Under the Constitution, Vice President Kamala Harris has the power to decide among senators.

Democrats could also win a seat in the state of Georgia, where a runoff will be held on December 6.

Americans ‘wisely reject Trump’s undemocratic, authoritarian and evil leadership’

The outgoing Democratic Majority Leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, reacted minutes after the announcement of the results, tweeting that they were a “manifestation” of things done by Democrats. According to him, this means that Americans have “wisely rejected the undemocratic, authoritarian, perverse and divisive direction that the MAGA Republicans wanted to take our country,” in reference to Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement.

The latter was omnipresent during the campaign, from the Republican primaries to homestretch rallies across the country.

More than 100 Republican candidates contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election have been elected, according to US media projections, but some of Donald Trump’s foals have failed.

Fueled by high inflation, Republicans have long believed they had a boulevard in front of them to win back both chambers during this traditionally difficult election for the ruling party.

The Republican majority in the House of Representatives?

The Republicans, however, seem capable of regaining a majority in the House of Representatives. They should use it to launch numerous parliamentary inquiries into the Joe Biden administration, or those close to him.

However, his victory promises to be much shorter than expected. NBC News projected a slim five-seat majority for Republicans on Saturday morning with 220 elected to 215 for Democrats. However, nearly 20 polls have yet to deliver their verdict, mostly in California.

But without the Senate, they will not be able to pass laws contrary to their goals, particularly on abortion or climate, or block their appointments of judges, ambassadors and government officials.

His disappointing results are generating turmoil among his elected officials in Congress, portending a possible reckoning. The end of Republican illusions for the Senate also deals a setback for Donald Trump, who is expected to announce on Tuesday that he will be a presidential candidate, his third attempt.
