North Korea fired an “unidentified ballistic missile,” the South Korean military said Thursday, hours after South Korea announced it would extend joint military exercises with the United States following provocations from Pyongyang.
“North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile,” South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said. The launch was preceded on Thursday by other launches, including an intercontinental ballistic missile, which Seoul said failed.
Earlier, the United States had already condemned the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile also fired by North Korea this Thursday, and called for strict application of UN sanctions against Pyongyang.
The launch “underscores the need for all countries to fully implement Security Council resolutions” to sanction North Korea, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
The launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile appears to have failed, the South Korean military said.
Two more missiles were launched over Japan, towards the Pacific Ocean, forcing the Japanese government to warn the population of some regions to seek shelter or stay at home.
