His delight in horror is creepy. Yevgeny Prigojine, leader of the Wagner Group mercenaries, who are fighting in Ukraine alongside the Russian army, greeted this Sunday the alleged execution, with a mallet to the head, of one of his former members accused of desertion.
Telegram accounts close to Wagner posted a video showing a man, his skull pressed against a block of stone, being hit over the head with a club. According to these sources, he would be a soldier from the group who deliberately surrendered to the Ukrainian army, but was later recaptured by the Russians.
“In this show, we see that (this man) did not find his happiness in Ukraine, but met unkind but fair people,” Wagner’s boss Evgeny Prigokhine was quoted as saying by his Press Service on Sunday. AFP could not confirm the authenticity of this video, nor its authors.
“It’s a magnificent production job, you can see it in one go. I hope that no animal was injured during the filming”, added Evguéni Prigojine.
Since 2014, mercenaries from the Wagner Group have been accused of serving the interests of Vladimir Putin’s regime in numerous conflict zones, from Syria to Ukraine, via Africa and South America.
In recent months, the group has been actively operating on the Ukrainian front, in support of the Russian army. He is accused of having toured prisons in Russia to recruit prisoners to fight, in exchange for reduced sentences.
In September, Yevgeny Prigojine, 61, admitted to founding the paramilitary organization after years of denial. This week he also bragged about conducting electoral influence operations in the United States.
