The Pope asks the participants of the COP27 “to take a step forward with courage and determination”

Pope Francis urged participants in the COP27 climate summit on Sunday to take “steps forward with courage and determination” in front of thousands of faithful in Saint Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

“I wish that you move forward with courage and determination on the path outlined by the Paris Agreement,” said the pontiff, after the Sunday Angelus prayer and after mentioning the meeting that is taking place in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

The UN climate summit is taking place in Egypt from November 6-18, but rich countries have yet to send developing countries a clear position in the debate on how to compensate them for loss and damage caused by climate change in their territories.

The Catholic pontiff also recalled that this Monday marks “the first anniversary of the creation of the ‘Laudato Si’ action platform, which promotes ecological conversion and lifestyles compatible with it” and which, with 6,000 participants, aims to ” respond to the cry of the earth and the poor”.

The platform is based on the encyclical “Laudato Si (Praise) – On the protection of our common home”, also known as the “green encyclical”, written in 2015 and which constitutes the first document of Pope Francis on ecology and its paper. in social justice.
