Slovenia’s first female president wants to promote dialogue

Lawyer Natasa Pirc Musar, who won Slovenia’s presidential election on Sunday, said her first task will be to promote dialogue “among all Slovenians” in a country divided between the left and the right.

“My first task will be to open dialogue between all Slovenians”, emphasized Pirc Musar, the first woman to be elected president of the republic in the European Union country of about 2.1 million inhabitants.

With almost all votes counted in this second round of elections, Natasa Pirc Musar, 54 years old and supported by the centre-left, obtained 54% of the vote, while the conservative and former foreign minister, Anze Logar, reached 46. %.

In the first round, held three weeks ago, Logar received 34% of the vote and Pirc Musar 27%.

“In democratic elections, Slovenians have shown what kind of country they want,” said the president-elect, noting that she had defended the values ”of democracy, human rights and tolerance” all her life.

Anze Logar has already conceded defeat in Sunday’s vote, saying he hoped Pirc Musar would “keep all the promises” he made during the campaign.

Pirc Musar succeeds President Borut Pahor, a centrist politician who has already served two terms as head of state.

After studying law in Ljubljana, Pirc Musar worked for about ten years as a journalist and presenter for the main news program of Slovenian public television, specializing in data protection and access to public information.

After earning a doctorate in law from the University of Vienna in 2015, his law firm quickly became one of the most prestigious in the country, with Melania Trump, the Slovenian wife of former US President Donald Trump, among his clients.
