Putin orders the demobilization of students from Donetsk and Lugansk

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the demobilization of students from the so-called People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk (in Donbass) who had been recalled before their annexation by Moscow, the Kremlin announced on Sunday.

“Putin ordered the demobilization of students and organization for their return to school,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by the Efe bureau.

Peskov added that the militias in Donetsk and Lugansk were integrated into the Russian Armed Forces after the absorption of these entities into the Russian Federation on September 30.

Pro-Moscow authorities in these so-called people’s republics ordered a general mobilization on February 19, five days before Russia launches its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

On that occasion, all men between the ages of 18 and 27 were summoned, with men under the age of 55 prohibited from leaving the territory of the separatist entities.

In recent weeks, Ukrainian troops have recaptured some of the territory they had lost to Russia since the invasion of their country on February 24 this year.

To this end, they are waging an ongoing counter-offensive in southern and eastern Ukraine, made possible with the weapons they received from their Western allies.

The recovery of the city of Kherson (south) on Friday, after the withdrawal of thousands of Russian troops, was the latest success of the Ukrainian counter-offensive.

The Russian-initiated war plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1930-1945).

In addition to yet to be determined casualties and the devastation of many parts of Ukraine, the war and sanctions against Russia have led to disruption in many sectors worldwide, particularly in the energy and food markets.

This crisis comes at a time when the global economy is still trying to recover from the disruptions caused by the covid-19 pandemic, issues that will be discussed at the G20.
