A restaurant chain in China has promised to compensate thousands of people after the protests waked off by the viral images of a client urinating in its fondue pot, full of broth.
A video, filmed in February 2025, shows a man standing on a table and relieving in his boat. The scene took place in one of Shanghai’s branches in Haidilao, one of the most famous Fondue chains in China.
A no culture broth of Internet users, of which many have expressed their disgust in social networks.
“Apologies” of the catering chain
After several days of flotation, Haidilao confirmed the incident this Wednesday, March 12, in a press release published in the Weibo social network. The restoration chain expressed its “most sincere excuses” and said that the prosecution began.
During the night of February 23 to 24, 2025, “two men, after their food, urinated in a fondue Cáquel in a private room of a Haidilao branch in Shanghai,” the company said.
A Chinese fondue that can also be tested with slices of meat, fish, vegetables or even mushrooms in a broth, in boiling, contained in a large caquelón placed in the center of the table and common to the guests.
Haidilao says it was slow to communicate due to an investigation that had to carry out to determine the place and time of the incident.

“Management has not developed emergency or training plans to deal with this type of situation, the staff of our branch has not been able to detect this abnormal situation or guarantee the security of the restoration place,” Haidilao deplored.
On the other hand, the chain has promised to completely pay the 4,109 additions established by the clients of this branch between February 24 and March 8. You will also pay the amount of each meal ten times. The total board for the chain, according to AFP calculations, could exceed one million euros.
In a separate statement, the Shanghai police said that two 17 -year -old teenagers were placed in “administrative detention.”
In Weibo, many Internet users criticize the company for having delayed the recognition of the incident occurrence. “Why didn’t these (apologies) intervene from the beginning?”
Haidilao is a renowned channel in China for the quality of its products, but also of its services, its restaurants offer free manicures to customers.
