Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has discussed with the leaders of the G20 countries that Ukraine’s grain export deal, which expires on Friday, should be extended indefinitely.
“Our grain export initiative deserves to be extended indefinitely,” he said in a closed-door video conference ahead of the Bali summit, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
Zelensky also proposed that the agreement negotiated by Turkey in July, which allowed the export of about 10 million tons of grain, be extended to two more Ukrainian ports.
The official maintained that “it is time” to end Russia’s “destructive” war.
“I am convinced that the time has come, that Russia’s destructive war must and can be waged,” he said.
On the other hand, he denounced “Russia’s crazy threats to use nuclear weapons”, stressing that there can be “no excuse for nuclear blackmail”, addressing the “G19”, excluding Moscow.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo also called for an end to the war in Ukraine this morning, during the opening of the G20 summit, which brings together the world’s leading economies on the island of Bali.
The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, is the great absence of the largest meeting of world leaders since the start of the covid-19 pandemic.
This is the first G20 summit since the war broke out in Ukraine on February 24 this year, and the lack of consensus among the participants could be reflected in the final joint declaration, as was the case at the summit of the Association of Nations of the Southeast Asia.( ASEAN), held on Sunday in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
Despite the fact that Ukraine is not part of the G20, President Volodymyr Zelensky was invited by his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo, the group’s interim president, to speak via videoconference.
Together, the G20 represents 60% of the world’s population, 80% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 75% of global exports, according to data from the group’s Indonesian presidency.
