A very long loan. In British Columbia, a man returned a book he had borrowed from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in May 1960, Radio-Canada reports on Wednesday, March 19.
The reader in question, Robert Murray, 83, had borrowed the book 64 years ago when he was in his second year in Electrical Engineering in the UBC.
This is the book Camping and Woodcraft: A manual for vacation campers and for travelers in the desertby Horace Kephart. The book offers practical councils to camp inside. The reader finally returned the book by mail to the university.
A $ 100 check as delay rates
To cover the costs of the delay, Robert Murray added a check for $ 100, a letter, as well as a newspaper of a newspaper dating from 2014 that explained the story of a person who has returned a book 30 years ago, with another edition of the same book in another library in another library.
With respect to Leprix of the check, the amount was not chosen at random. For around sixty years, Robert Murray told 2 cents per day, with inflation of 3 %. Later, the latter will learn that the library decided to eliminate delay costs in 2020.
In January, Susan Parker, Library of the UBC, received the package of Robert Murray.
I have been working in libraries for 40 years, and I have never seen a book returned after so long, “said Susan Parker.
This story has aroused several reactions within the library. “It surprised me a little because generally, when the books have been borrowed for a long time, people do not return them, or if they do, it is anonymous,” said the radio-channel librarian.
After this case, Susan Parker advised readers not to wait for so much time to send a book and invite academics to talk about library staff.
