The United States and the three European countries that are parties to the Iran nuclear deal (Britain, France and Germany) submitted a new resolution to the IAEA on Tuesday night denouncing Tehran’s lack of cooperation, diplomatic sources said.
The text “was presented tonight,” said a European diplomat, while a second source had previously reported the same information, on the eve of the opening of the quarterly meeting of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). ).
Les quatre pays occidentaux ont pris cette décision après avoir pris connaissance la semaine dernière d’un rapport de l’Agence faisant état de l’absence d’avancées sur la question de trois sites non déclarés, où des traces d’uranium avaient été découvertes for the past
According to the draft resolution, the Council “expresses its deep concern” over this issue which remains unresolved “due to insufficient cooperation from Iran.”
Tehran must provide “technically credible explanations”
The text “considers it essential and urgent” that Tehran immediately provide “technically credible explanations” about the presence of uranium particles, as well as “access to sites and equipment”, to “allow the collection of samples”, it is written.
An IAEA delegation will visit Iran at the end of the month to try to advance this longstanding dispute.
Another cause for concern, says a diplomatic source: “the continued expansion of Iran’s nuclear program,” despite the fact that the IAEA’s verification capabilities have been severely restricted for almost two years.
In an informal document distributed to member states on Monday, Moscow criticizes the “counterproductive action” which, if successful, “will have irreversible consequences.”
