Thousands of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro gathered in front of the barracks this Tuesday, a holiday in Brazil, to once again demand an intervention by the army against the victory of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the presidential elections.
“We don’t want Lula to take over on January 1, we don’t want a communist country, we want a better Brazil,” Lais Nunes, a 30-year-old bank worker, said outside the military commando headquarters. East, in Rio de Janeiro.
“There are several reports that there was fraud during the elections (…) that we cannot accept,” added Leandro de Oliveira, a 38-year-old police officer.
Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro denounce “fraud” in the electronic voting system in force since 1996. A system repeatedly attacked by the far-right president before the polls, without, however, providing evidence of irregularities.
Reinforced security in the capital
However, the Brazilian Ministry of Defense has published a report showing that “no inconsistencies were observed” in the result of the electronic ballot boxes. And international observers validated the ballot.
Security has been tightened in the capital and the police have restricted access to the Plaza de los Tres Poderes, where the Presidential Palace, Parliament and the Supreme Court are located. Similar demonstrations had already demanded the intervention of the army after the October 30 elections, where Lula won by a narrow margin (50.9% against 49.1%).
Apart from a brief speech two days after his defeat, Jair Bolsonaro remained silent and reclusive, his official agenda empty. He practically disappeared not only from public life but also from social networks where his accounts were extremely active.
It does not participate in the summit of the twenty most industrialized countries that was inaugurated in Bali, Indonesia, and the delegation of the main economy of Latin America is headed by the head of diplomacy Carlos França.
