UN says avoiding escalation of war is ‘absolutely essential’

The UN Secretary General defended Tuesday night that it is “absolutely essential” to prevent the escalation of the war in Ukraine, expressing himself “deeply concerned” by the fall of a Russian-made missile in Poland.

In a brief statement released by UN spokesman António Guterres, he called for a “thorough investigation” into the missile accident that killed two people in Poland.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday night that a “Russian-made projectile” hit the territory of this NATO country near the border with Ukraine, killing two people.

“In the village of Przewodów (…), a Russian-made projectile fell, killing two citizens of the Republic of Poland,” says a statement from the ministry’s spokesman, Lukasz Jasina.

In the same note it is added that the Russian ambassador in Poland was summoned to give “detailed explanations”.

US President Joe Biden said today that the missile that struck Poland and killed two people was unlikely to have been fired from Russia.

“There is preliminary information that questions that,” Biden told reporters when asked if the missile was fired from Russia. “It’s unlikely on the lines of trajectory that it was fired from Russia, but we’ll see,” he added.

On the other hand, the leaders of the G7 and NATO decided to support an investigation into the accident of the Russian-made missile, revealed the US president.

In Bali, where Joe Biden is participating in the G20 summit, the official explained that this agreement was reached “unanimously” during an emergency meeting that took place this morning.

According to the France-Presse news agency (AFP), the meeting took place at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Bali, where Joe Biden is staying.

In addition to Biden, the emergency event was attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Prime Ministers of Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan, Justin Trudeau, Rishi Sunak, Giorgia Meloni and Kishida Fumio, respectively, and the French president. Emmanuel Macron meeting.

Also present are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, the White House said.
