Online sales platform Amazon is preparing to lay off about 10,000 employees, The New York Times reported.
This will be the largest headcount cut in the history of the company, founded by Jeff Bezos, which had some 1.6 million employees worldwide at the end of 2021.
However, a significant part of the workforce consists of seasonal workers, who are recruited during periods of greater activity, namely around Christmas.
The cuts will focus on Amazon’s retail division, human resources and device organization.said the New York Times.
Amazon contacted AFP and did not immediately comment on information about the layoffs.
Amazon had indicated two weeks ago that it would take a break due to the uncertainty in the economy.
Recently, other major tech companies such as Twitter and Meta have also announced staff cuts.
Last Wednesday, Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, announced that it will lay off about 11,000 employees.
