The “majority” of G20 members strongly condemns the war in Ukraine

On aspects of the war in Ukraine, the final communiqué of the G20 mentions the divergent positions of the countries, which in particular made it possible to obtain Russia’s signature.

The “majority” of the G20 members “strongly condemned the war in Ukraine” and all agreed that the conflict “undermines the world economy,” according to a joint statement issued on Wednesday at the end of the group’s summit in Bali.

“Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed that it was causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the world economy (…). Other views and different assessments of the situation and assessments have been expressed. sanctions”, can we read in the final communiqué of the G20.

If this sentence gives everyone, especially Russia, the possibility of associating themselves or not with the sentence and the text, it is still a victory for France. This Monday, the Élysée said that he did not believe in a declaration of the twenty countries condemning the war in Ukraine.

The entire G20 condemns the use of nuclear weapons

However, the twenty countries have together underlined in this joint text that “the use or threat of the use of nuclear weapons is unacceptable”. “It is essential to enforce international law and the multilateral system that guarantee peace and stability,” they said in their statement.

“Our time should not be a time of war,” they add.

The first joint agreement since February

Indonesia, host of the G20 leaders’ summit, had hoped in early 2022 to be able to focus its presidency on cooperative efforts to recover the global economy from the Covid-19 pandemic. But the war launched in February by Russia in the Ukraine upended this program, particularly by widening divisions between the countries.

Following a series of G20 preparatory ministerial meetings that failed to reach common positions, Indonesia has intensified diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement at the end of the summit.

“Today we managed to adopt and ratify the declaration of the G20 leaders,” he welcomed Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who stressed that it is the first agreement on a joint text since February within the group.
