Polish President Andrzej Duda has admitted that the missile that killed two people in Poland on Tuesday “was launched by Ukraine” due to an “unfortunate accident.”
On Twitter, the head of state wrote that it was probably an S-300 missile made in the Soviet Union, but there is no evidence that it was fired by the Russian side or that it was an “intentional attack”.
“There are many indications that it was a Ukrainian air defense missile, which unfortunately fell on Polish territory,” he says.
Speaking to reporters in Warsaw, Andrzej Duda added that Poland will not invoke NATO Article 4, which provides for consultations between allies whenever the “territorial integrity, political independence or security” of any of the member states is threatened. of the Atlantic Alliance.
“Ukraine defended itself, which is obviously understandable, also firing missiles, whose objective was to shoot down Russian missiles,” defended the head of state, recalling that Russia fired nearly 100 missiles at Ukraine on Tuesday.
The Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, also believes that “most of the evidence collected indicates that the activation of NATO Article 4 may not be necessary this time, but this instrument is still in our hands.”
The shell fell on Polish territory near the border with Ukraine on Tuesday, killing two farmers.
