“No” missiles are closed. The Portuguese ambassador to NATO says that the allies “await conclusions”

The Portuguese ambassador to NATO, Pedro Costa Pereira, assures that the allies are still “waiting for the conclusions” of the ongoing investigation, and the meeting of the North Atlantic council “does not” put an end to the case of the fall of Russian missiles in Poland .

“We are awaiting the conclusions of the investigation,” replied Pedro Costa Pereira, admitting that “right now everything points to a missile fired by Ukraine to intercept a Russian missile.”

“There is still no definitive conclusion on the matter,” stressed the ambassador, admitting that the case of the missiles in Poland “is not yet closed.”

“But obviously there is no way to take responsibility away from Ukraine,” he guaranteed, considering that “Ukraine exercises its right to self-defense, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, and has the full support of NATO in that sense”.

Pedro Costa Pereira considers that “if this happened it was because there was an absolutely massive and disproportionate attack from Russia and Ukraine did nothing but defend itself.”

The ambassador, who considered the fall of the missiles in Poland as “a completely regrettable case”, says that NATO had a “completely united” reaction, in the face of a situation that “in the end will always be [responsabilidade] from Russia”.

“If there had not been an aggression against Ukraine, this would not have happened,” he said.

“We are all completely united in the council when it comes to condemning (…) the attack that Russia perpetrated yesterday, [e] in solidarity with Poland and Ukraine in their right to self-defense”, said the ambassador, guaranteeing that “there has been no divergence in the council on this today, nor should there be”.

questioned by TSFabout possible differences between the 30 Member States on the measures to be adopted by NATO, and the possible activation of Article IV of the North Atlantic Treaty, which was even mentioned by some Member States, the ambassador says that there was consensus in the room on the Alliance reaction.

“Article 4 is an article that basically launches formal consultations between the allies about a certain event that endangers security within the territory of the alliance,” he recalled, guaranteeing that “if there was any indication that there was a Russian missile launched at purposely or even accidentally by Russia, directly on the territory of the alliance, most likely, article 4 was activated.”

Regarding the discussions on Wednesday, the ambassador “did not perceive that there had been disagreement on the part of any ally in this regard.”
