The former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro underwent a long operation on Sunday, April 13 in the abdomen due to intestinal occlusion, after having felt strong pain, sequelae of a sharp attack in 2018.
Jair Bolsonaro, 70, “is currently subject to laparotomy (surgical intervention consisting of opening the patient’s abdomen) to undo the intestinal adhesions and rebuild the abdominal wall,” said the DF Star DF hospital in a statement.
The operation, which began in the morning, should not end before 6 PM (9 PM GMT), said a source of this private Hupée clinic.
A dozen supporters of former extreme right-wing leader (2019-2022) were waiting for news in front of the hospital entrance. Among them, Maurio Borges Bernardes, 84, a crucifix hung around his neck, who came to bring his “moral and spiritual support.”
“It’s going to get out of that, I’m sure,” said this businessman dressed in a yellow and green shirt, the colors of Brazil, and with a cowboy hat with a self -adhesive with the effigy of Jair Bolsonaro.
“A long operation” in progress
The ex -president’s ex -wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, called her husband’s supporters on Instagram to “continue praying” for him.
“The medical team told us that it would be a long operation, because there are many” intestinal adhesions, “he described.
Adhesions are scar tissue bands that stick the intestine to the abdominal wall, which can cause an obstruction that blocks intestinal transit.
“These operations are delicate because it is necessary to have the patience necessary to get on each grip,” Camila Beltrao told AFP, a surgeon specialized in the digestive system.
“Every time a patient operates again, the probability of training a new adhesion increases,” he added. Jair Bolsonaro has already suffered several years in recent years linked to the sequels of the attack with a knife during the 2018 presidential campaign.
“Unbearable Dolores” at the beginning of his tour
The former president joined Brasilia on Saturday night aboard a health plane from Natal (Northeast), where he had been hospitalized the previous day after having felt strong pain in the abdomen.
“Unbearable Dolores”, according to Rogerio Marinho, a senator of his party, who accompanied him at the beginning of his tour in several cities of the state of the Río Grande do Norte, of which native is the capital.
This tour, aimed at mobilizing its supporters in this poor region and a historical strength of the left, was organized two weeks after its reference to trial for an alleged attempted coup d’etat.
Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in 2018 by an unbalanced in the middle of a crowd. He was finally elected president a few weeks later.
He declared on Saturday in the social network X that his doctor had told him that it was “the most serious situation since the attack that almost cost his life.”
“After having lived so many similar episodes in recent years, I have become accustomed to pain. But this time, even doctors were surprised,” he added. Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court decided to open a lawsuit against Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro not eligible until 2030
The Prosecutor’s Office accuses him of having hatched a long -standing plot with nearby collaborators, in particular high -risk ministers and soldiers, to remain in power after the 2022 elections, lost in the second round against his great rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, current president of the left.
Inelegable until 2030 for their attacks without evidence on the reliability of the Brazilian electronic poll system, Jair Bolsonaro is still waiting for this conviction to be canceled or reduced to appear to the 2026 presidential elections.
On the left, Lula, 79, leaves the mystery about a possible candidacy for the selection. Its popularity is in a mast, heavy for inflation, and has also experienced health problems recently.
In December, it had to be operated in an emergency to absorb a hematoma caused by a hemorrhage near the brain linked to a fall.
