Queen Margaret of Denmark celebrated her 50 years on the throne on Saturday with a carriage ride and greeting from the balcony of Copenhagen City Hall, after two postponements of public celebrations.
The postponement was due to the pandemic and mourning for Queen Elizabeth II of England.
The royal carriage left Amalienborg Palace, on a traditional route for this kind of celebration in the Danish monarchy and thousands of people were on the streets, many with the Danish flag.
The public celebrations were scheduled for the beginning of the year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the monarch’s accession, on 14 January 1972, following the death of her father, King Frederick IX.
However, they were postponed due to the restrictions put in place to contain the covid-19 pandemic and the date was marked only by a law in parliament with reduced participation and a flower offering at Roskilde Cathedral, west of Copenhagen.
The new date of public celebration was moved to September, but was postponed again due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II of England.
The 82-year-old Queen of Denmark is Europe’s oldest monarch since the death of Elizabeth II and the only woman to head a monarchy.
