Brazil: Bolsonaro remains isolated at his official residence due to a leg infection

Since the second round of the presidential elections at the end of October, Jair Bolsonaro has only made one public appearance. “It’s a health issue,” justifies the vice president.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been confined to his official residence in Brasilia since he lost to Lula due to a skin infection on his leg, the vice president told the newspaper on Wednesday. The balloon.

“It is a health issue. He has a leg wound, erysipelas. You can’t wear pants. How can you come here in Bermuda?” Vice President Hamilton Mourao told a reporter for this newspaper, on the sidelines of a ceremony at the Planalto presidential palace.

Silence since his defeat

The presidency did not respond to a request for information on the state of health of the head of state. Erysipelas is a skin infection caused by bacteria, which in most cases affects the lower limbs.

Since his defeat by a short header against leftist icon Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the second round of the presidential election on October 30, Jair Bolsonaro, 67, has appeared only once in public, two days later, to a speech in El Planalto.

After being walled off for nearly 48 hours in silence, the far-right outgoing president did not explicitly concede defeat and congratulate the winner of the vote.

Two weeks ago he left his residence in Alvorada, about five kilometers from Planalto, where the offices of the presidency are located. His absence was noted at COP27 in Egypt and at the G20 summit in Indonesia.
