Five people were shot dead by motorcycle assailants who opened fire on protesters and law enforcement in the southwestern Iranian city of Izeh, authorities said Wednesday.
“Terrorist and armed elements” arrived on two motorbikes at a central market in this city in Khuzestan province, and opened fire, killing five people and wounding 10, the official Irna news agency reported.
Khuzestan deputy governor in charge of security, Valiollah Hayati, said three men, a woman and a girl had been killed and several wounded were in serious condition.
The country shaken by a wave of demonstrations
Calm had returned overnight as police searched for the attackers, the lieutenant governor said.
On October 26, at least 13 people were killed in Shiraz in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group and carried out at the Shahcheragh mausoleum, the main Shiite Muslim shrine in southern Iran.
The new attack comes as the Islamic Republic has been rocked by a wave of protests since the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, arrested by the moral police for violating Iran’s strict dress code.
Dozens of people, mostly protesters but also members of the security forces, have been killed since the protest began, authorities say.
