After humiliation in the White House, a new interview? The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrived in Rome on Saturday, April 26 to attend Pope Francis’s funeral, was able to meet with his American counterpart Donald Trump, a senior official told the AFP.
“The two presidents could meet,” said the official based on anonymity.
Donald Trump, who arrived in the Italian capital on Friday night, said shortly after kyiv and Moscow, who launched an invasion of Ukraine three years ago and occupy 20% of their territory, were “very close to an agreement.”
The US president also assured in an interview broadcast on Friday night that Russia would retain Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula that attached in 2014. But despite its pressures, Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed on Friday night that Crimea belonged to Kyiv.
Zelensky in Rome
President Zelensky arrived in Rome on Saturday morning with his wife, said his spokesman Serguii NykyForov. “Volodymyr Zelensky, First Lady Olena Zelenska and the Ukrainian delegation will participate in the ceremony” of the funeral, he added.
On Friday night, the Ukrainian president said he was no longer sure to “have time” to go to Rome. Volodymyr Zelensky had shortened his international tour and returned to kyiv after a Russian missile attack that had killed 12 civilians and wounded dozens of others on Thursday at dawn in kyiv.
