At least 22 injured in California car crash

At least 22 people were injured this Thursday, five of them seriously, after a car hit a group of recruits during an exercise in the city of Whittier, California, United States.

The 22-year-old driver was arrested after driving the vehicle the wrong way in the early morning hours, crashing into the group and only stopping when he collided with a pole, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Sheila Kelliher.

Police sources explained, according to the Los Angeles Times, that the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.

California authorities are beginning proceedings to determine if the driver was under the influence of drugs, although they initially ruled out that he was drunk.

California Highway Patrol Deputy Chief Charlie Sampson said about 75 recruits were conducting the training exercise, grouped in four columns when the vehicle approached at high speed.
