The Sistine Chapel closes its doors. The famous religious building, a monument of the essential Vatican known, among others, for its roof painted by Michelangelo, will no longer be open to visits this Monday, April 28 “for the needs of the conclave”, allows the museums of the papal city in a brief press release.
“We inform you that the Sistine Chapel will be closed to the public as of Monday, April 28, 2025 for the needs of the conclave,” is indicated in the document, visible on the construction site that hosts about 10,000 visitors per day.
“All visits to the Vatican and Via Triumphalis Necropolis are also suspended,” he added.
Conclave
The funeral of Pope Francis, which took place last Saturday, opened a period of nine days of mourning to the Vatican, which will last until May 4. Since Sunday, the faithful can meditate on the tomb of the Sovereign Pontiff Deut, installed in the Sainte-Marie-Majee de Rome Basilica.
During the conclave, which will open on May 7, the 135 cardinals that can vote, that is, those over 80 years of age, will meet in the Sistine Chapel, closed to the public, to designate in the greatest secret of the next bishop in Rome.
It is also from the famous Vatican religious building that smoke will increase: black in case of voting without success, white if the next Pope is chosen.
