Reports of explosions in Crimea. Odessa and other regions of Ukraine under attack

Several explosions were heard this Thursday morning in the north of the Crimean Peninsula, a Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, while Odessa was hit by Russian missiles and there are reports of attacks in several places in Ukraine.

Explosions were heard in Dzhankoy, in the north of the Crimean peninsula, a Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia in 2014, according to the Ukrinform news agency, while Odessa was hit by Russian missiles.

Ukrainian media cite as sources residents who recorded videos in the area and later posted them on social media. The news agency also published photos of a plume of smoke in the Russian-run city.

Ukrinform also said that air defense systems were activated on Thursday morning in this area. On social networks, according to Ukrainian media, a possible attack on the military airfield located on the outskirts of the city is suggested.

“Russian air defenses are probably active in Dzhankoy,” according to social media, cited by Ukrinform, but this information could not be independently confirmed.

The Government of Ukraine assured a few days ago that part of the Russian military units that left the Kherson region, in southern Ukraine, went to Crimea to defend that territory.

A Russian missile attack also hit the Odessa region in southern Ukraine for the first time in weeks, the regional governor said.

Local infrastructure was affected, Odessa regional governor Maksym Marchenko said on the Telegram social network, warning of the threat of a “great deluge of missiles across the entire territory of Ukraine.”

Marchenko’s statement comes amid media reports of explosions in other parts of Ukraine and regional governors urging residents to stay in bomb shelters as the threat of missile attacks persists.

These attacks today follow another on Tuesday, in which a missile also fell in Poland and caused two deaths.

“The missile was not ours, without any doubt,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on television Wednesday.

“I think it was a Russian missile,” he added, but NATO and Polish government officials admit it was probably a missile belonging to the Ukrainian air defense system.
