Put on several hours in an elevator. It is the misfortune that hundreds of Spaniards gathered this Monday, April 28, while the country was affected by a general energy cut that also affected Portugal.
During the day, Madrid firefighters rescued 174 people trapped in elevators throughout the city, reports the Spanish newspaper El Pais. This is the case of Ana Maria, a Madrid that remained trapped in an elevator while preparing to leave her building with her husband, the District of Low Palomeras.
“I shouted like crazy, but nobody listened to me,” said the local newspaper resident.
The couple took an hour in the couple finally thanks to the intervention of a technician. At 3 in the afternoon, the maintenance company declared El Paris to have received “more than one hundred calls” on similar incidents.

In Barcelona, five students and a teacher were also blocked for two hours in an elevator of the School of Design and Visual Arts. The emergency bell was out of service, they tried to challenge the people who were outside, shouting.
“I started crying,” Clara told El Pais, when she suffers from claustrophobia.
In X, call messages have multiplied when electricity was cut. “I am blocked in an elevator and the light will come from one moment to another,” says a social network user, cited by the Reuters news agency.
Even others have flooded social networks with videos that say their live mishaps. “Tiktok, I’ve been caught in this elevator for one or two hours, I guess the current has been cut,” said a Tik Tok.
To avoid a panic movement, the Gallego Rescue Unit summoned the inhabitants to keep the calm and insured that they did not lack air while waiting for the arrival of help.
“Keep calm. There is oxygen. Use the emergency button. If the elevator is not equipped with this system, call 112,” they said in X.
This Monday, the massive electric collapse paralyzed most of Spain and Portugal, renting airplanes in the field, interrupting public transport and forcing hospitals to suspend their routine operations.
The Spanish Ministry of Interior declared the National Emergency State and deployed 30,000 policemen throughout the country to maintain order, while the governments of the two countries convened emergency meetings of their offices.
At the moment, the exact cause of this general failure is unknown. Portugal suggests that the problem would come from Spain, when the latter points to a defective link with France.
