A fresh wave of Russian strikes hit several regions of Ukraine on Thursday morning, where the first snow came amid widespread power outages caused by shelling by Moscow troops.
In Dnipro (central-east), eight people, including a 15-year-old boy, were injured in a shelling, Mayor Borys Filatov said on Facebook. Two “infrastructures” were affected in this city, according to the presidency, without specifying which ones.
Very close to Kyiv, two cruise missiles and kamikaze drones were shot down by the Ukrainian defense, the city’s military administration said. An AFP journalist saw one of these missiles fly over a residential area in the east of the capital.
In the Odessa region (south), the Russians attacked an infrastructure site, injuring three people, the regional administration said.
Extension of power outages
These shelling strikes come as the first snowfall in the morning arrived in Ukraine, which is suffering extensive power outages as Russian strikes specifically target energy infrastructure, according to Kyiv.
National electricity operator Ukrenergo announced the extension of power cuts for the day due to the “worsening situation”.
A “difficult” week ahead
“Due to a sharp cooling, electricity consumption increased in the regions of Ukraine”, which “further complicated the already difficult situation of the electrical system”, leading to “broader restrictions” on electricity consumption throughout the country, lamented Ukrenergo on Facebook.
“This is a necessary measure to preserve the stability of the energy system after the sixth Russian targeted missile attack on energy facilities,” the group said, referring to the massive Russian strikes on Tuesday.
A light blanket of snow blanketed Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on Thursday morning, where many neighborhoods were without power in the morning. The regional governor, Oleksiï Kouleba, warned on Wednesday that next week will be “difficult”, with temperatures that could drop “to -10°C”.
