Russian citizens with a different nationality or residence permit abroad will be able to perform compulsory military service, according to a decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
The document contains changes to the regulation on the procedure of military service, the official TASS news agency reported.
Until now, only people with Russian citizenship could be included in the mandatory one-year military service for men between the ages of 18 and 27.
Foreigners could only complete this military formation under contract and in the ranks of privates, sailors, sergeants or non-commissioned officers.
The decree signed by Putin today stipulates that compulsory military service will be performed by “soldiers, sailors, sergeants, non-commissioned officers who are citizens of the Russian Federation, including those who hold the nationality of a foreign state or a residence permit, permit or other document confirmation of the right to permanent residence abroad”.
