US Senate passes resolution to protect same-sex marriage

A bill protecting same-sex marriage in the United States passed a crucial milestone on Wednesday in the US Senate, following an agreement earlier this week between the two parties.

By a majority of 62 to 37, senators, including a dozen Republicans, voted in favor of a procedural provision in a rare vote that crossed party lines just over a week after the midterm elections.

In the United States, same-sex unions have been guaranteed by the Supreme Court since 2015.

However, after the historic setback of jurisprudence on the abortion law, determined by the Supreme Court, many progressives fear that this right is also at risk.

In mid-July, the US House of Representatives passed a law to protect this type of marriage across the country.

All the Democratic members of the lower house plus 47 Republicans approved the proposal, which was rejected by almost 160 Republicans.

In the Senate, negotiations had been underway for several weeks, with the aim of securing the support of at least 10 Republicans, the number necessary for approval due to supermajority rules.

On Monday, a group of senators from both parties announced that an agreement had been reached to that effect.

This text “will ensure that LGBTQI+ and mixed couples are uniformly respected and protected by federal law,” US President Joe Biden said in a statement.

Most Americans support same-sex marriage, even in Republican ranks, but the religious right has maintained a consistent opposition stance.
