“Neither the United States nor Russia will attempt to use nuclear weapons,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday, referring to the meeting of intelligence representatives of the two countries in Ankara.
“According to the data I have received from my director of intelligence as far as the United States and Russia are concerned, neither side will be tempted to use nuclear weapons.”said Erdogan, quoted by Turkey’s official Anadolu office on Thursday.
The Turkish head of state confirmed that CIA director William Burns (US intelligence services) and Russian counterpart Serguei Narychkine (FSB) were in the Turkish capital earlier this week.
During the meeting, Burns warned the head of Russia’s secret service about the consequences of using nuclear weapons, as Washington had previously stated that Russia had threatened to use this type of weapon in Ukraine.
Earlier, the White House had also stated that the meeting in Ankara “was not any negotiation” or “a discussion of an agreement on the war in Ukraine”.
