“Do not leave your home”: more than 160,000 people confined in Spain due to a toxic cloud of chlorine

A fire broke out in an industrial warehouse that stores pool products located near Barcelona. The surrounding residents are strongly invited to stay at home.

More than 160,000 people living in five municipalities in the Spanish region of Catalonia were called this Saturday, May 10 by the authorities not to leave their homes, due to a toxic cloud of chlorine caused by a fire in an industrial deposit.

“If you are in the affected area, do not leave your home or your workplace,” asked the civil protection of social networks in the northeast region on social networks. The affected municipalities are on the coast, between Barcelona and Tarragona.

At the moment, “no injuries have been reported,” firefighters said in the social network X, who have mobilized important means to extinguish the fire.

“Keep the doors and windows closed,” recommends the city, which advises to leave your home alone “in an emergency or for health reasons.” “If you have to leave in case of emergency, use a FFP2 mask,” he said.

The fire exploded at dawn this Saturday, May 10 in an industrial warehouse that stores pool products, in the municipality of Vilanova I La Geltru, which generated the toxic cloud of chlorine, according to firefighters.

This Saturday morning, firefighters said they had controlled the fire, but worked in “the surveillance of the cloud generated by the fire to follow their evolution and their toxicity levels.”

“The chlorine rarely comes on, but when it burns, it is very difficult to extinguish it,” said the owner of the industrial warehouse, Jorge Viñuals Alonso, on the radio.
