A senior Ukrainian human rights official has reported the “horrifying” extent of torture in Kherson during the Russian occupation of the southern Ukrainian city, retaken last week by Kyiv forces.
“I have not yet seen ‘torture’ on such a scale,” “after visiting all the torture rooms in various regions of Ukraine,” Dmytro Loubynets, head of the Parliament for Human Rights, said on national television.
“The extension is horrible,” he added.
“Dozens of people” were “electrocuted, beaten with metal tubes. Their bones were broken” and “the Russians filmed everything,” he accused. “I am sure that in every major locality we will discover a torture chamber. Because it is a system established by Russia.”
The Ukrainian authorities have announced that they have discovered several torture chambers in areas of the Kherson region recently recaptured from the Russians after months of occupation, while various media have also mentioned the existence of these rooms.
