The speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, said Thursday that she will not run for the Democratic leadership in the US Congress, after confirming that the Republicans secured the leadership of the lower house, after the midterm elections.
In a speech to standing ovations from Democrats and Republicans alike, Pelosi announced she would step down after leading the Democrats for nearly 20 years and following a brutal attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, last month at their San Francisco.
“Now we must move boldly into the future. The time has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so highly respect. And I am grateful that so many are ready and willing to take on this incredible responsibility,” Pelosi said in a speech in which she recalled her passage from “housewife to speaker of the House of Representatives.”
The leader of the House of Representatives is the third most important figure in American politics after the president and vice president.
