United States: Nancy Pelosi resigns as leader of the Democrats in Congress

The Democratic representative has announced her intention to stop leading her party in the US Congress after the midterm elections.

Nancy Pelosi, an important figure in American politics, announced Thursday that she would resign as Democratic leader of the House of Representatives in the future assembly, where the Republicans obtained a majority.

“I will not be running for the Democratic leadership of the next Congress,” the 82-year-old said during a speech on the floor, saying she wanted to usher in “a new generation.”

President Joe Biden immediately paid tribute to her, calling her a “staunch defender of democracy.”

No longer a leader, but still a representative

To applause, he recalled memories of his 35 years in the Chamber, which he saw evolve to be “more representative of our beautiful nation.” Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to sit on the House bench, also spoke about darker times, such as the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“Indeed, American democracy is majestic, but it is fragile,” he warned.

Nancy Pelosi kept her retirement in suspense to the very end, taking home two different versions of her speech. She will continue to sit on the camera, as a simple chosen one from California.
