A Dutch court on Thursday sentenced two Russian citizens and a Ukrainian to life imprisonment for the shooting down of a Malaysia Airlines MH17 plane in 2014 in an area of eastern Ukraine dominated by pro-Russian separatists.
For the court, the charges are so serious that “only the maximum prison sentence is adequate,” judge Hendrik Steenhuis was quoted as saying by AFP.
However, almost none of the convicted will serve time, especially since none of them appeared in court. The Dutch prime minister has already argued that the conviction was an important step, but it is not the end of the process.
Flight MH17, carrying 298 people, was shot down over Ukraine.
