Harvard president accepts a salary reduction to compensate for the Trump administration grant gels

The president of Harvard University, Alan Gaber, agreed to reduce his salary by 25% to save money and, therefore, contribute to deal with the gels of the subsidies decided by the Trump administration.

Harvard University tries to rescue its boxes. After the freezing of more than $ 2.2 billion in federal funds by the Trump administration, the prestigious university located in Boston announces that its president, Alan Garber, accepted a 25% reduction in his salary.

According to the University Journal, Harvard Crimson, this salary reduction will be implemented from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. If the president’s salary amount has not been presented, the newspaper emphasizes that this position generally implies an income of more than one million dollars per year.

Alan Garber is not the only one who volunteered for financial effort. Other members of senior management have accepted a budget cut according to Harvard spokesman Jonathan Swain. Dozens of regular teachers had also declared at the beginning of the month donating 10% of their salary, recalls CBS News.

Mobilized financial resources “to support research activities”

The oldest university in the United States also announced on Wednesday, May 14, after launching $ 250 million to support research within it.

“Although we cannot absorb all the amount of federal funds suspended or canceled, we will mobilize financial resources to support essential research activities during a transition period,” said President Alan Garber and the dean of the Faculty of John Manning in a statement.

Harvard and the Trump administration began a confrontation. This university, one of the best classified in the world, has particularly attracted the wrath of the Republican President by attacking the freezing of his government of two billion dollars in federal subsidies. A freezing decided after the institution refused to meet a series of Donald Trump’s requirements.

The US president, who accuses the University of having thrown out -semitism during the movements of the students against the war in Gaza, wants to have a right of passage on the procedures for the admission of the students, the hiring of teachers and the programs.

Donald Trump has recently portrayed Harvard, who has become the main objective of a broader offensive against the American education system, in the “extreme left -wing institution”, “progressive disaster” and “threat to democracy.”

“A fertile soil for discrimination”

On Tuesday, May 13, the Trump administration anti -Semitism group announced that eight US federal agencies “rescinded around $ 450 million in subsidies (additional) in Harvard”, especially accusing the University of “Failure” in its fight against “anti -Semitic intimidation” on its campus.

These 450 million are added to the 2.2 billion dollars in frozen federal funds last month. It is likely that Harvard tax exemption is also suspended.

“The Harvard campus, previously a symbol of university prestige, has become a fertile terrain for ostentatious virtue and discrimination,” he wrote this working group in a letter addressed to Harvard. “A dark problem is on the Harvard campus, and by favoring the appeasement of responsibility, the leaders of the establishment have renounced their rights over the support of taxpayers,” he added.

In response, the director of the institution, Alan Garber, said he had taken measures to ensure that Jewish or Israeli staff feel excluded or intimidated on the campus, while arguing that the measures of the federal government “undermine” and “threaten” academic freedom.

“Harvard will not renounce its principles of the foundations, protected by law, only for fear of retaliation without the foundation of the federal government,” he said.
