The Pope returned this Friday to express his desire for the war in Ukraine to end and said again that the Vatican is available to do everything possible to mediate in the conflict, because “peace is possible.”
“Yes, I have hope. We are not going to give up, peace is possible. However, everyone must commit to demilitarize hearts (…), in order to later deactivate and disarm violence. We must all be pacifists. , not just a truce, which can only serve to rearm. True peace, which is the fruit of dialogue”, Francisco said, in an interview published this Friday in the newspaper “La Stampa”.
The Pope also reiterated that “the Vatican is ready to do everything possible to mediate and put an end to the conflict in Ukraine.”
“We are constantly attentive to the evolution of the situation (…). The Secretary of State works and works well, every day, and is evaluating any hypothesis and assessing each opening that could lead to a true ceasefire, to a true negotiation. In the meantime, we are committed to humanitarian support for the people of Ukraine,” Francis said.
The Pope once again condemned the war and assured that “it is the desire for power and the arms trade” that is behind all these tragedies.
“When empires are weak, they try to make war to feel strong and also to sell their weapons. Three world wars in one century! And we have not learned!” declared the Pope.
Regarding the danger of nationalism and populism in Europe, of which he has always warned, Francis stated that “we must always be attentive to all ‘isms’, because they hypocritically sow social and political evil.”
Asked if he is happy in the position of Pope, Francis assured: “thanks to my vocation I have always been happy in the places where the Lord has placed and sent me. This is a service and the Church has asked me to. The Lord wanted So go ahead. And I do what I can, every day, trying not to stop.”
