The European Union will reexamine its association agreement with Israel in the light of the last events in Gaza, the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas announced on Tuesday, May 20.
“There is a large majority in favor of the review of article 2 (on respect for human rights) of our association agreement with Israel. Therefore, we will embark on this exercise,” he said after a meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels in Brussels
An agreement in force for 25 years
Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called on Tuesday to “reexamine” this association agreement to “show if Israel respects its obligations.” “Once it is established that a violation is manifested, there is the possibility of suspension,” said France Inter. Jean-Noël Barrot deplored that Gaza’s band has become “a dying man, not to say a cemetery”, describing an “unbearable” situation in the enclave.
This agreement signed in 1995 and enters into force in 2000 constitutes “the basis of legal relations of the EU with Israel,” said the European Commission of its site. “The agreement aims to provide an appropriate legal and institutional framework for political dialogue and economic cooperation between EU and Israel,” according to the European Union.
