The images are impressive and distressing. Part of the birch glacier, in the canton of Valais in Switzerland, collapsed, wrapping almost the entire town of Blatten below.
Fortunately, the city had been evacuated almost 10 days before, precisely in the risk of land landslides. However, a person is missing.
This is the worst scenario that happened, authorities said at a press conference this Wednesday night. The images, shared on social networks, are very impressive.
As the photos show, the people have disappeared almost completely. In addition, a nearby river was also covered by landslide.
“We have lost part of the people, but not our hearts”
“I was working at the restaurant and, suddenly, there was a great noise. I saw the lights illuminated and died briefly. Then there was a great explosion,” said Joel Coutinho, employee of the Sports Hotel, a few kilometers from Blatn, to our RTS colleagues.
“We have lost part of the village, but not our hearts,” he said, very moved, Matthias Bellwald, president of the Blatten commune.
