The Lead Party, Chega officially became the second political force of Portugal, before the Socialist Party, after having obtained 22.76% of the votes and 60 seats in the early legislative elections of May 18, according to the final results published this Wednesday, May 28.
André Ventura’s game won it in two of the four districts abroad, whose results were not yet known.
The Democratic Alliance of the Center Right, which won the vote with 31.79% of the votes and 91 seats, far from the absolute majority of 116, won the other two seats abroad. The Socialist Party, with 22.83% of the votes and 58 deputies, is the third political force of the country in terms of seats.
Place in the formation of a government
The publication of official results now opens the way to the formation of a new government. The Portuguese president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who already consulted the matches last week, will once again receive the three main political parties arrived at the top of the electoral ballot, as early as Thursday afternoon, before appointing a prime minister, maybe at night.
“First I will listen to the three parties. If I can publish a press release on the same day, with the appointment, I will,” said the head of state.
Even in the absence of an absolute majority, the victory of the Democratic Alliance led by outgoing prime minister Luis Montenegro of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, center to the right), should push the Portuguese president to appoint him again to the position of head of government.
Stacking with suspicions of conflict of interest, Luis Montenegro had presented a vote of confidence in March, but his failure had forced President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to dissolve the assembly and convene new elections.
