It is a morbid discovery made by tourists at Edisto Beach, in South Carolina (United States), this May 23, 2025. While they walked through the sea, they fell on the bones.
They thought, at first, that these were fossils. But looking more closely, they saw that these were more human remains, local authorities said in a Facebook post, seen by Le Parisien.
Current analysis
Tourists obviously alerted the authorities, who went there. “Upon arrival, the members of the Sheriff’s office, accompanied by Edist’s police, said the scene and opened a preliminary investigation,” said the Sheriff’s office.
The bones have been recovered and transported to the University of Medicine in South Carolina for a forensic analysis and identification.
At the moment, the identity of the person to whom these bones belong, as well as the causes of his death. However, the Sheriff’s office specifies that the place of discovery is not trivial.
An old funeral site
In fact, in the nineteenth century, there was a commune called “Edingsville Beach”, here. “The first investigations suggest that the bones come from an old forgotten funeral,” he said in the press release.
According to CBS, which cites the island site, Edingsville Beach was a popular vacation destination, especially for rich families. There were houses overlooking the sea, several churches, a school and some other buildings.
Most housing were destroyed by erosion and other climatic events.
