A red alert issued for air authorities indicates that the height of the volcanic cloud is estimated at 6.5 kilometers. However, the Catania airport, located nearby, remained operational. Culminating at 3,324 meters, Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, has regularly exploded in the last 500,000 years.
