The United States Defense Minister Pete Hegseth ordered the Navy to change the name of one of its military vessels called Harvey Milk, a famous gay activist killed in the late 1970s, reports the Military Specialized Media on Tuesday, June 3.
The site is based on an anonymized official and explains that he also had access to a Navy document that explains that the initiative is part of Pete Hegseth’s desire to “restore the culture of warriors” in the US armed forces.
Other ships in the Trump administration viewfinder
Other US media, CBS News, report that it is planned to change the name of several other ships, including two baptized according to former judges of the Supreme Court, the progressive figure Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as well as the first African -American that has been appointed, Thurgood Marshall.
Asked by AFP, the Pentagon responded with the voice of its spokesman Sean Parnell that “any possible name change” would be announced “once internal procedures are finalized.”
Pete Hegseth “is attached to guarantee that the names of all the facilities and resources of the Ministry of Defense reflect the priorities of the commander in chief, the history of our nation and the warrior spirit,” he added.
Since Donald Trump’s return in January, the Republican government has led a vast offensive against diversity promotion policies.
Harvey Milk, an old marina
A great figure of the democratic opposition, Nancy Pelosi, reproduced strongly in a press release, a “shameful and vindictive draft of those who fought to tear down barriers and allow everyone to live the American dream.”
“This malicious initiative does not strengthen our national security or warrior spirit. On the contrary, it is an abandonment of a fundamental American value: honor the heritage of those who worked for the construction of a better country,” he continues.
Born in 1930 in New York, Harvey Milk served in the US Navy during the Korean War in the 1950s.
In San Francisco, he later became the first municipal councilor of California openly gay and a decorative figure of the struggle for the rights of the homosexual community. He was killed in 1978, at the same time as the mayor of the city George Moscone, both killed by a former colleague. It was in 2021 that a supplier oil tanker was baptized with the name of Harvey Milk.
