“We are preparing for a possible attack.” The European deputy Rima Hassan, who embarked on a boat for Gaza with the Swedish ecological activist Greta Thunberg in particular, said on Tuesday, June 3 that the ship “was fly by drones”, before specifying Wednesday that these were Greek devices.
“We had two alerts tonight: a first around 11:30 pm and a second at 3:22 am, it was confirmed that they were Greek surveillance drones,” he said on Wednesday.
The sailboat “Madleen”, rented by the coalition of the Fleeta for Freedom, sailed on Sunday with a dozen people on board. The objective of the mission, according to the coalition, is to deliver a burden of humanitarian aid to Gaza despite the lock of the sea imposed by Israel in the Palestinian coastal territory devastated for almost twenty months of war between Israel and the Islamist movement Palestinian Hamas, which caused hostilities on October 7, 2023.
Its objective is to meet “several objectives: denounce the humanitarian block and the current genocide, the impunity that benefits the state of Israel, and raise awareness about global and international opinion,” said Rima Hassan before leaving.
“The Freedom Flotilla humanitarian ship is flown by drones. The Flatilla Flotilla team is preparing for a possible attack,” said the LFI elected on Tuesday.
Greta Thunberg also said in a story on Instagram on Tuesday that a drone was above the ship. “We have to remain alert in case of drones because the last ship was attacked on May 2 by this same process and in the middle of the night. I repeat here there were no injuries / dead on the previous ship because it was much larger than ours, in the case of a drone attack, ours does not maintain, Rima Hassan wrote on X on Wednesday.
The Israeli Navy “ready to protect the maritime space”
The Israeli Navy is ready to “protect the maritime space” against this ship, said General Brigadier Effie Defrin, spokesman for the Israeli army. “The Navy mobilizes day and night to protect Israel’s maritime space and maritime borders,” said General Defrin during a television press point.
“In this case too, we are ready,” he added in response to a question in this boat that went on Sunday from Catania, Sicily, and after having sailed to the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip.
The flotilla coalition for freedom, founded in 2010, is a non -violent international movement of solidarity with the Palestinians, with a humanitarian dimension and a political defense against the blockade of the Gaza Strip in the position of Israel after the taking of the power of Hamas in 2007.
In early May, a ship, the “conscience”, with which the coalition of the flotilla for freedom hoped to recover supporters, among which Greta Thunberg, in Malta, and then was damaged. The activists said they suspected an attack against Israeli drones.
The humanitarian situation is disastrous in the Gaza Strip, where “100% of the population” is “threatened with the famine”, according to the UN, after a total blockade of two and a half months, partially relaxed by Israel in the second half of May.
