Russia: Strong explosion of a gas pipeline near St. Petersburg

If the authorities have confirmed the facts, the causes, circumstances and possible human cost of this explosion have not been specified.

A strong explosion occurred on Saturday at a gas pipeline not far from St. Petersburg in the Vsevolozhsk district, located east of the city of St. Petersburg in the Leningrad region, regional authorities reported to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

A fire broke out, as several witness videos circulating on social media also show.

“According to preliminary information, the fire is being extinguished (…) near Vsevolozhsk by two rescue teams,” the Leningrad region Telegram channel stated.

The authorities, who ensure that the fire no longer represents an immediate danger to the population, are conducting investigations to clarify the circumstances of this explosion.

Another explosion this Saturday morning

The incident comes just hours after another explosion hit a residential building on Sakhalin Island in Russia’s Far East on Saturday morning.

Several floors of the building collapsed, killing nine people, including four children, according to local governor Valery Limarenko.

According to Russian media, it was an explosion caused by a gas leak. Some 60 rescuers were sent to the scene to clear the rubble, according to Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations.
