The electric fences, the drones, the thermal cameras and the police dogs were deployed at the G7 summit in the Canadian Rocky Mountains to protect world leaders … of the many bears of the region.
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, the Italian Giorgia Meloni and the Frenchman Emmanuel Macron are among the leaders gathered since Sunday at an isolated mountain hotel for three days of discussions.
“The Grizzlis are a great concern, but the team is ready to deal with all wild species,” said Sheena Campbell, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security of the Province of Alberta (west) where the summit is celebrated.
For this, barriers of more than two meters have been installed, especially around places with food. And against bears, there are “electric fences”. To this is added thermal cameras, police drones and also dogs specially trained in the fight against bears.
The drones “will monitor the activity of wildlife in real time,” added Sheena Campbell, who specifies that last week, for example, in the area, the team saw the Grizzly Grizzly, black bears, pumas, impulses, mouflons and deer. However, the Canadian authorities and the organizers of the Summit refused to give more details for security reasons.
65 Grizzlis present in the Kananaskis golf course
According to the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail, a “bear alert” issued in May is still in force for the Kananaskis golf course under the hotel where managers are located. The newspaper adds that around 65 Grizzly live in this area and that some parts have closed in recent weeks after reports of aggressive charges by a mother with two young people.
However, the organization that manages Canadian parks remembers that “most bears end without injury.” But if the bear attacks, then it is advisable to sleep on the floor and make the dead. Unless the bear is really aggressive, so it is time to defend itself: “Intivate the bear: cry, hit it with branches or rock, do everything possible to show you that you are not easy to preside.”
