Indonesia: The impressive images of the eruption of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano

In the immediate future, this eruption was not a victim. However, residents and tourists should avoid the area and it is also advisable to use masks to protect themselves from volcanic ashes.

An eruption volcano in eastern Indonesia projected a huge column of ashes in the sky on Tuesday, June 17, according to the authorities, which raised the alert level to the highest degree.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a two-vertices of 1,584 meters high on the tourist island of Flores, exploded at 5.35 pm, according to a press release from the Volcanology Agency.

“The height of the eruption column was observed about 10,000 meters above the upper part. The ashes column was gray and a thick density,” he said, after raising the alert level at the highest level of a four -level system.

In the immediate future, no damage or victim has been reported.

Beware of volcanic ashes

Residents and tourists should avoid any activity within a radius of at least seven kilometers around the volcano crater, said the head of the Geology Agency Muhammad Wafid.

He also warned about the possibility of dangerous land landslides, called Lahars, a type of flow of volcanic materials composed of mud or rubble, in case of heavy rains, particularly for communities near the rivers.

He also urged the inhabitants of the area to wear masks to protect themselves from volcanic ashes.

In November, Mont Lewotobi Laki-Laki had exploded several times, killing nine and forcing thousands of people to evacuate and causing the cancellation of many international flights to Bali. After Tuesday, no flight cancellation was reported at this stage.

Laki-Laki, which means “man” in Indonesio, is linked to another quieter but larger volcano, 1,703 meters, Perempuan, which means “woman.” Indonesia, a vast archipelago, is experiencing a frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position in the “circle of fire” of the Pacific.
