The general director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, judged, this Sunday on BFMTV, that “the situation was extremely serious” at the Zaporijia nuclear power plant. He denounced the “deliberate and targeted” attacks against him.
“Stop this madness (…) The situation is extremely serious,” he lamented this Sunday. “It is not new, we say it and we repeat it (…) the situation is unsustainable and today we saw how it could worsen and give rise to very serious situations.”
For Rafael Grossi, it is “incredible” that some countries consider a nuclear power plant as “a legitimate military objective.”
“Direct attacks on the plant”
The director of the agency said that the IAEA had “a specialized security team” installed on the site “with which they were in contact on Saturday night to “assess the damage”. At this stage, Rafael Grossi said that he clarified that the installation had been “hit several times and in sensitive places”, particularly in the area “where the spent fuel is”.
“They are direct attacks on the plant, this has not happened since this summer. It shows the obvious worsening of the situation”, continued the IAEA director general, who evokes “a dozen” missile shots. And, according to him, there are also attacks against “the sites that supply the electricity needed by the facility.”
He added that they had not been able to go to the place this Sunday because it was “too dangerous”: “there were still shots, the shelling started again,” he continued, hoping “to be able to do an inventory tomorrow (Monday) tomorrow.”
The IAEA director spoke this Sunday with Emmanuel Macron after the attacks that hit the Zaporijjia nuclear power plant and of which Moscow and kyiv accuse each other. Ukraine’s nuclear agency accused Russia on Sunday of bombing the plant site, shortly after indictments from Moscow accusing Kyiv of attacks against this site.
