A plane crashed for wanting to avoid a turtle. This is the conclusion of the preliminary report of the National Board of Transportation of US Transportation (National Transportation Security Council) published on Wednesday, June 18. A few days before, a Universal Stinson 108, a small passenger plane, lost its landing at Sugar Valley’s private airport in Mocksville in North Carolina, in the United States. The pilot and one of the two passengers died. Another is seriously injured.
It is a communications operator from the control tower of this small private aerodrome that warned the pilot of the plane of the presence of the reptile on the landing floor. From its cabin, the operator has seen that the right wheel of the plane rises and heard that the pilot activates the gas supply lever. Without success since the plane disappeared a few seconds later.
Another witness agreed to answer questions from the researchers of the National Transportation Board. That day, he cut the grass at the end of the runway and also saw the pilot raising the right wheel of his plane to avoid the turtle. Even so, according to him, the wings ranged from one side to another, the device picked up the height and then disappeared. Then he would have heard the clash and seen from the smoke, in a wooded area near the airport.
A final report published by one to two years
According to the National Survey of the Transportation Board, the plane crashed less than 80 meters from the landing road in the trees, before causing fire. “The plane, which is in one piece, was stuck among several trees. However, fragments of fabrics were found in a neighboring current. The device rested on its left side, the bent wing under the fuselage. The right wing was folded towards the tail,” specifies the preliminary relationship.
The circumstances and causes of the accident will be explored in the final research report of the National Transportation Security Board. But research could still take at least one or two years.
